The WebGL version is highly recommended for beginners. Note that neither the Unity version nor the Gameloader will not receive any updates due to problems with Unity. Hopefully this will inspire a host of decent sports movies, as Rush proves that you can mix character study and even existential musings with the thrill of sport.Rush Team is an online first-person shooter game, developed by a programmer known as "Roka." The game is built on Unity, a 3D engine and Photon network engine. How he gets you to initially loath him, only to be cheering him on at the climax is the work of a great actor, and it's a crime that he has been snubbed by the Academy this year. Hemsworth is very good in his first 'proper' post-Thor role, but it is Bruhl that you take away from the film. Although it occasionally drifts into formulaic territory with the introduction of the 'wives' (played by Oivia Wilde and Alexandra Maria Lara, respectively), Howard cleverly uses this as an insight into Hunt and Lauda's personalities. Rush is an exhilarating experience, able to distinguish each race from the next and literally putting us in the driver's seat with the use of digital cameras. But he doesn't neglect his characters, and evokes the great work done on Frost/Nixon (2008), which was also a study of two giant, clashing personalities coming together on the world stage. Yet here, although the bright sheen of the 70's initially takes some getting used to, he has managed to create a world that is very much alive, using snappy editing, a pumping soundtrack and some growing sound design to re-create this world for petrol-heads. His past films have been unjustifiably successful, critically and commercially, never stamping a recognisable directorial trait onto his work. Fast cars, beautiful women and exotic locations hardly sounds like a recognisable workload for Ron Howard, one of the most play-it-easy directors out there. Their hatred of one another only serves to fuel the flames, and leads to Lauda's defiant early return to the driver's seat, scarred and bandaged. ![]() As Lauda watches Hunt claw back some points in the 1976 Formula One season, it becomes clear that these two need each other to survive. This, naturally, leads to tragedy and a particularly wince-inducing scene in which Lauda requires having his lungs vacuumed, but it's at this point that we realise just what these two drivers mean to each other. There's little fun to be had with Lauda, but played by Bruhl, he evolves into the underdog of the movie, perhaps the only one that actually gives a damn about his own life and the life of his opponents. But where Rush succeeds the most is challenging our early conceptions of these two characters. In every sense, he's the perfect villain. ![]() He was the early-night type, 'rat-faced' and cold. ![]() His rival, Austrian Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl), was focused, clinical, and even helped design the cars he would drive. He was reckless, willing to risk his life and others in order to win, but, as described in the film, there was no better driver in the world in terms of raw talent. The long-haired, dashing Englishman James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) was all about the adrenaline, embracing the post-race parties and lying with the many women that would throw themselves at him. Rush portrays the clash of two opposing personalities. The sport nowadays is little more than advertising on wheels, but when the likes of James Hunt and Niki Lauda battled it out on the track, epic rivalries were created, and no matter how talented these men were at driving these "coffins on wheels", every race could spell out death. The sport itself is frightfully dull (although I'm sure plenty will disagree with that), but the sportsmen willing to lay down their life for a kick and a trophy are infinitely more fascinating, especially in the days of lax safety rules. As Asif Kapadia's gripping and extremely moving 2010 documentary Senna proved, cinema audiences have a thirst for the larger-than-life characters that inhabit the Formula One track. ![]() ![]() Shannon and other experts we spoke with say that before turning to CBD for sleep, you should try more proven therapies. And CBD also interacts with another receptor in the brain that researchers have linked to anxiety. At least one of those type of receptors is thought to affect the body's sleep/wake cycle, offering one explanation for how CBD could affect sleep directly. Recent studies have shown that cannabis compounds interact with receptors throughout the body-the so-called endocannabinoid system-including in the brain. Scientists have some biological explanations for how CBD may affect both sleep and anxiety. Collins, Colo., also thinks that some people may have slept better because they "worried less about their sleep issue." But Shannon, who is also founder of the Wholeness Center, an integrative medicine clinic in Ft. Those benefits might be due to the placebo effect, says Scott Shannon, M.D., the study's main author and an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Colorado-Children's Hospital in Denver. For those with sleep problems, the results weren't as clear cut, though people did report some improvement in the first month. In a study in the January issue of The Permanente Journal, published by the Kaiser-Permanente health insurance company, Colorado researchers looked at the health records of 72 patients who were treated with CBD for either anxiety or poor sleep.ĭuring the three-month study, anxiety levels did decline, even in people whose main complaint was poor sleep. One way CBD may help with sleep is by easing anxiety. Still, he notes that if you occasionally have difficulty sleeping, CBD is considered a safe, non-habit-forming, natural alternative.įor those looking to try CBD to see whether it helps improve sleep, here's what you need to know. Maroon urges those with insomnia to see their doctor before using any treatment. Maroon says he doesn't see CBD as a treatment for insomnia, but instead as an "alternative natural method to help calm anxious thoughts that often delay or interrupt natural sleep." He points out that next to nothing is known about the safety or effectiveness of CBD in children, pregnant women, or older people when used for sleep or anxiety. But Liz Fuller, age 47, a makeup artist in Boston, says she tried two different CBD brands-spending about $135-to treat her insomnia, and neither worked. For example, Melissa Giovanni, age 32, a licensed dietitian in Nashville, Tenn., takes CBD regularly for sleep and says it often helps. All of that could affect who CBD helps for sleep, and who it doesn't.Īnd how it affects people does seem to be hit or miss. Some other research hints that CBD may also affect sleep directly, by interacting with receptors in the brain that govern the body's daily sleep/wake cycles, according to a 2017 review of sleep and cannabis in the journal Current Psychiatry Reports.īut "many questions still remain as to timing, the amount to take, and route of dosing CBD for sleep," Maroon says. Most notably, he says, it appears to ease anxiety and pain, both of which can make it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep. A study out this month, for example, suggests CBD might help people with short-term sleep problems.Īnd Joseph Maroon, M.D., a clinical professor and neurosurgeon at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center who has researched the effect of cannabis on the brain, says that CBD has properties that could help some people sleep better. And many existing treatments, particularly prescription and over-the-counter drugs, are often not very effective-and are risky, too.Ī small but growing body of scientific research provides some support for CBD as a sleep aid. It's easy to understand why people are turning to CBD to help with sleep: Almost 80 percent of Americans say they have trouble sleeping at least once a week, according to another recent nationally representative CR survey of 1,267 U.S. ![]() Having taught many university-level studio art courses, I have noticed in my students a surprising investment in the notion of originality and authorship in their own creative practices, even as they freely participated in the exchange, reuse, and remixing of visual languages on social media and the internet. This is an important undertaking in a context in which young people's identities and world views are increasingly shaped through digital texts and interactions. Throughout, the article argues that critical discussion of digital texts and practices opens up the possibilities for students to analyze their everyday lived media experience. Edward, in a secondary school English class and an undergraduate popular culture course. The second half illustrates this potential by examining the use of one popular video remix, Buffy vs. The first half of the article explores the opportunities that remix presents to reflect on mainstream media ideologies, emerging modes of collaborative creativity, and the complexities of intellectual property. This article considers how one form of digital remix – the video remix – might be used in classrooms to introduce critical conversations about representation, appropriation, creativity and copyright. ![]() ![]() Collaboratively written by Owen Gallagher, Eduardo Navas, Mette Birk, Eli Horwatt, Mark O’ Cúlár, Martin Leduc, and Tara Zepel.Īppropriation, transformation and remix are increasingly recognized as significant aspects of digital literacy. The text is in constant revision and readers are encouraged to join in its writing. One of the group goals is that the text becomes a statement of what video could be as a reflective form of the networked culture that is developing at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Video was selected as the subject of analysis because members have a common interest in time-based media, and also because video remixing is at the forefront of media production. The emphasis on video remixing is the result of a collaborative rewriting activity among the contributors, who each wrote independent paragraphs that went through constant revisions once combined as a single text. The aim of the collaboration is to evaluate how the creative process functions as a type of remix itself in a period when production keeps moving toward a collective approach in all facets of culture. You’ll need to follow a full guide on how to dual-boot install Windows on your Steam Deck, preferably on a separate SD card, and cross your fingers that all goes to plan. While native Game Pass support is possible on Steam Deck, it takes a little too much jiggery-pokery for most gamers to adopt. Steam Deck on the other hand isn’t so simple. While the Xbox launcher on PC is still somewhat buggy, overall the experience is good, and highlights the brilliance of Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere. Game Pass is one of the major differences between the ROG Ally and Steam Deck, and makes the ROG Ally feel like the unofficial handheld Xbox that many fans have been clamoring for. This makes sense considering it’s 60g lighter and forgoes the larger grips on the back of the device in favour of the slighter design. It’s got a far slimmer profile compared to the Steam Deck, but it also lacks that certain sense of weightiness and stability offered by Valve’s handheld device. ![]() The ROG Ally is a sleek device that’s easy and light to hold. On the other hand, the Steam Deck is a little more old-school, with a classic black and grey scheme across the whole device. Looks-wise, the ROG Ally plays it a little bolder with its white design and light-up RGB thumbsticks. Design: ROG Ally vs Steam Deckīoth the Steam Deck and ROG Ally are armed with some similar design philosophies that are present across a central screen with a standard ABXY side form control. For a more in-depth look at the performance stats, see our full ROG Ally review here. You can, of course, run things at 30W still at 720p, in which case you’ll see an even larger increase over the Steam Deck. All tests run at the highest available graphics preset.Īt the higher-power 30W setting, the ROG Ally again takes the lead, though the gains are diminished by moving up to the more demanding 1080p resolution. At 720p on the 15W power setting, the ROG Ally scored 38fps in Total War: Three Kingdoms, 57fps in Borderlands 3, and 64fps in Hitman 3, compared to 25, 42, and 44 on the Steam Deck. This compares to the Steam Deck’s 4-core custom Zen 2 APU, which caps out at 15W plugged in or on battery.ĭuring our tests, it was clear to see that the Z1 Extreme is the superior chip. The Z1 Extreme is an 8-core Zen 4 processor with RDNA 3-powered graphics, and can be cranked up to a maximum of 30W when plugged in. The ROG Ally is the first handheld gaming PC to use AMD’s new Z1 Extreme mobile processor, which is notably more powerful than the Steam Deck’s custom APU, as well as the thus-far mobile king, the AMD Ryzen 7 6800U. Both devices ran up similar battery depletion when using these settings as well, averaging about 4-5 hours on most play sessions. Indie titles tend to run well on both devices, with the likes of Vampire Survivors, Dead Cells and Hades all running at an easy 60fps on Steam Deck and ROG Ally without issue. You’re going to be limited to that excitement for around 1-2 hours at most, but, this also isn’t unexpected as the Ally runs a similar size battery to the Steam Deck. 1080p on the Ally’s 7-inch screen looks amazing and the detail is wonderful, especially for a handheld device. When it comes to performance while gaming, we tested the Ally on a few different games with various launchers. Specs: ROG Ally vs Steam Deck Performance and Battery Life: ROG Ally vs Steam Deck Here's how the PC handhelds compare across the board overall. But, overall, Steam and other launchers work just fine on the Ally, while also feeling a tiny bit clunky at the best of times. There’s still plenty to love, and the Ally has a clear ambition to be a jack-of-all-trades handheld device, while in comparison the Steam Deck specialises in being a portable Steam machine, with the added bonus of other launchers if you’re willing to tinker. Generally, as a handheld device, the ROG Ally is not as initially intuitive as the likes of the Steam Deck. |
